“Dus, hoe was je zeilweek?” Deze vraag hebben veel mensen mij gesteld de afgelopen tijd. Dat deze week veel meer was dan simpelweg een week zeilen, is het eerste wat ik ze tevergeefs probeer uit te leggen. De hoop is dan ook snel opgegeven, uitleggen hoe deze week was is bijna onmogelijk. Een week lang omringd door niets anders dan zee, je nieuwe beste vrienden en gigantische zeilschepen die ineens klein lijken tegen de horizon. Ja, het is alweer eventjes geleden dat Team Haagse Hogeschool voet zette op Terschellingse grond, de zeilen hees op de Noordzee en feest vierde in Odeklonje. Maar deze prachtige week zal door niemand snel vergeten worden, al is het maar voor de knalrode zeiljas die als herinnering aan de kapstok hangt en zo nu en dan gedragen wordt.
Dit was mijn eerste keer op zee en mijn eerste keer zeilen, wat de hele ervaring waarschijnlijk nog specialer maakt. Dat ik echt goed kan zeilen na deze week durf ik niet te zeggen, maar ik heb genoten van het hijsen van het fissazeil, het aan roer staan en niet te vergeten het chillen in het kluivernet. Ik ben in de metershoge mast geklommen (sorry mam!) en heb pannenkoeken gebakken bungelend boven de zee. Maar wat nu echt mijn favoriete moment van de week was, durf ik niet te zeggen. Alhoewel het in de ogen kijken van zwemmende zeehonden wel dicht in de buurt komt.
Engeland hebben we niet gehaald. De weer- en windgoden, of simpelweg ons gematigd zeeklimaat, waren ons niet gezind. Maar stiekem vond niemand dit erg. Het gaat uiteindelijk om het zeilen, niet de plek waar je voet aan wal zet. En de zeilers die het in eerste instantie nog wel jammer vonden, waren als snel bijgedraaid na een lekkere portie kibbeling op Terschelling en een wandeling door de duinen. Naast kibbeling en ijsjes eten, werd er op Terschelling flink gedanst tijdens het legendarische ‘Foute Fitness’ themafeest. De meest foute outfits en fluorescerende schmink werden uit de weekendtassen gehaald. Met dit feest werd goed te toon gezet voor de rest van de week!
Na Terschelling werd de tocht hervat richting Den Helder. Voor team Haagse voelde dit als thuiskomen. Hier bevindt zich namelijk de thuishaven van de Stortemelk en wij hadden hier dus al eens eerder een weekend samen doorgebracht tijdens het klusweekend. Het gala en heel wat pannenkoeken verder, werd aangekondigd dat we een 24-uurs race zouden varen, met als uiteindelijke eindbestemming Beverwijk. Later is deze race omgedoopt tot ‘zeeziektekoers’: 24 uur lang werd de hardste wind (en dus de hoogste golven) opgezocht om een zo groot mogelijke afstand af te leggen. Uiteindelijk heeft dit ons (samen met de andere race) een gedeelde 4e plek opgeleverd!
Tijdens deze week is onze biologische klok flink op de schop genomen. En nee, dit komt niet enkel door de feestjes. Races zeilen betekent ook ’s nachts de wind in de zeilen. Aan boord werd een 4-uur's shiftsysteem gehanteerd: drie groepen, waarvan er telkens één zeilt, één slaapt en één stand-by staat. Ik had het geluk dat mijn groep de prachtige zonsondergangen mee kon maken. En zodra de zon onder de horizon was verdwenen, de magische sterrenhemel. Waar we minder geluk mee hadden, is dat er niet meer dan 2 knopen wind te meten was tijdens onze zeilshift. Dat betekende dus weinig zeilen en vooral veel koukleumen. Gelukkig konden we af en toe een beetje opwarmen tijdens het tosti’s maken en pannenkoeken bakken.
Tussen Terschelling en Den Helder hebben we een nacht voor anker gelegen. Hier waren de shifts ook werkzaam, maar gelukkig waren die iets minder koud. Om een beetje in de gaten te houden dat we niet spontaan zouden wegdrijven, moesten eens per uur coördinaten van herkenningspunten gecontroleerd worden. In andere woorden: 30seconds spelen en cup-a-soup drinken om wakker te blijven! Geslapen werd er trouwens in de hut of bovendeks tijdens de stand-by shift. Dit was vooral erg comfortabel als je aan de goede kant van de boot lag, in het goede bankje of op de grond, anders was je eigenlijk vooral bezig met ervoor zorgen dat je niet van de ene naar de andere kant rolde.
“Plastic soep!” Deze woorden vlogen je deze week soms om de oren. De kleinste weggevlogen stukjes plastic werden bijna achterna gerend. Er moest en zou niks in de zee verdwijnen. Omdat je omringd was door zee en je dus veel bewuster was van het plastic probleem (per jaar komt er meer dan 8 miljoen ton plastic afval in zee terecht) was je veel milieubewuster bezig. Plastic werd netjes gescheiden in de big bags van Kimo en er werd kort gedoucht. Want ook waterverspilling was een no-go. Omdat je hier een week zo intensief mee bezig bent geweest, houd je dit ook vast als je eenmaal thuis weer het dagelijks leven hebt opgepakt. Dat een week zeilen dit effect zou hebben had ik niet verwacht, maar is een super goede bijwerking.
Bij aankomst in de laatste haven van deze week was het gek om de stap te zetten van de Stortemelk aan Amsterdamse wal, wetende dat dit de laatste keer was. Het idee dat je niet meer na een rondje door de stad of vanavond na een feestje weer terug zal keren in die kleine maar knusse hut, met je buddy om mee na te praten. Gelukkig werd dit korte verdriet snel vergeten met een heerlijke barbecue in het Delirium café. Met daarbij een passend muziekje op de achtergrond dat ervoor diende te zorgen dat we niet binnen 5 minuten in slaap zouden vallen bij het plaatsnemen op de houten bankjes. Als kers op de taart kregen we hier tijdens de prijsuitreiking te horen de media-award gewonnen te hebben! Ja, je leest het goed, ik kon het eerst ook niet geloven, we hebben de media-award gewonnen! Dat was al dat Reescourant schrijven, Instagram posts plaatsen en video’s editen helemaal waard.
Of ik volgend jaar weer meega? Daar hoef ik geen twee keer over na te denken. “Reeskriebels”, noemen wij dat. Ik kijk nu alweer super veel uit naar een week die net zo super leuk is. Voor nu rust er mij nog maar één gepaste manier om dit artikel af te sluiten. De woorden waarmee veel kadebiertjes zijn geproost: “Oh oh Den Haag, oh oh Den Haag, wind in de zeilen, bier in je kraag!”
